The boy’s hockey team got off to a hot start, winning six in a row after losing its first game of the year to Medway. Westwood is currently ranked #4 in the Massachusetts Division 2 South bracket. Heading into its game versus Medway on January 21st, the team will have its work cut out. This game serves as a chance for the hungry Westwood team to get some revenge against the team that got the best of them early in the season.
Last Saturday’s 2-2 tie versus Hopkinton was one of the biggest games of the year. Hopkinton has proven to be one of the top teams in the Tri Valley League, beating Medway 5-3. The strong Hopkinton team currently has one of the best records in the league at 6-0-1. Senior, John Reissfelder stated, “It was a big game for the boys and a battle for the top spot in the TVL.”
After this Saturday’s Medway game, the boys will go to Pirelli Veterans Arena to play Medfield on the 24th. Taking a tough loss to Medfield in boys basketball early this week, the hockey team will look to regain bragging rights.
Games versus Medway and Medfield are the games that define a season. Both Medway and Medfield have been huge rivals of Westwood ever since this program began. Every year that Westwood beats both Medway and Medfield, they have the opportunity to make a run in the playoffs.
This next stretch of games will be a great indicator of how the team will do for the end of the season and the playoffs. Senior Captain Aaron Janfaza stated, “I can’t say were the most skilled team in the league, but every year we come out and battle the top teams. I think we can attribute that to our coaching and hard work.” Coming out of this stretch with a couple of wins could give the team the necessary momentum to make something great happen in the playoffs.
